Dublin Weekend Break
Newgrange and the hill of Tara
Newgrange and the hill of Tara offer a completely different insight into Dublin life and this time it is life as it was 3,000 years ago (some claim 5,000).
Newgrange is an ancient burial site which takes the form of a large passage tomb and estimates guess that it dates back three millennia to the pre-Celtic era. It is sited in the Boyne Valley and is likely to be one of (if no the) oldest man-made structure that you are ever likely to see.
Located outside Dublin this monument is not for everyone, but for those who are interested in such things it is a world heritage site and those obsessed with “Celtism” will wallow in its claimed maritime connections with Portugal and northern Spain (no doubt Galicia).
Also in the area is the hill of Tara which is claimed to have significance to the Irish kings of old, but also offers stunning views of two thirds of Irelands counties.
Tourist tips
This monument really is incredibly popular and nighttime visits during the Solstice are pre-booked for years in advance. Daylight trips are considerably easier to organize and if you use a company they will drive you to and from Dublin.
For most tourists, Newgrange and the hill of Tara are definitely for a nice warm day when the sun is shining and the views are good.
