The book of Kells
The book of Kells is one of the world’s oldest manuscripts and was written some time around 800AD. It is famous not just because of its age, but because of the amazing illustrations (referred to as illuminations) that fill page after page.
The book of Kells is on public display at Trinity College Dublin (within the Old Library) and, if you find artifacts like this interesting, it is a must see exhibit.
The book of Kells was written and illustrated by Celtic monks and is composed of four Biblical Gospels along with some introductory and explanatory text and a wealth of vivid illustrations. The book was produced in a style known as “Insular” and is one of a small numbers of volumes produces around Ireland and the British Isles that have survived to this day. Other examples include, the Book of Durrow and the Durham Gospels. All are now priceless.
