Dublin Weekend Break

The Dublinia (and the Viking world)

The Dublinia and the Viking world is a themed museum that follows the development and evolution of the city of Dublin from the early twelfth century to the mid sixteenth century and the dissolution of the monasteries. The museum fills the former Synod Hall of the Church of Ireland and is one of the city’s most attractive buildings.

Much of the museum focuses on medieval Dublin with some “semi” interactive displays that cleverly include smells and sounds that conjure up images of what life must have been like during this period.

Key attractions include the reconstructions of a street, a market and a house and there are excavated artifacts including a real skeleton. All in all the museum succeeds in its attempt to take you back into Dublin’s past and it is definitely a visitor attraction for all of the family – children seem to love it.

In summary, this museum is interesting and informative and has various simulated models plus informative video and features to tease the senses. It also receives around one hundred thousand visitors every year which is pretty good for Dublin and it is always evolving and improving.

The Dublinia will be of great relevance to anyone interested in history or wanting a family friendly place to visit, but perhaps less so to those wanting interaction or a Disney style punchy presentation.
