Dublin Weekend Break
Aras an Uachtarain
The Aras an Uachtarain is the official residence of the President of Ireland and parts of the building are open to the public on Saturdays only. Tickets are free and can be obtained from the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre (in which the Aras an Uachtarain is set).
The Aras an Uachtarain has a long history and was built in the mid eighteenth century and called the Viceregal Lodge. At first it was used by the British Lord lieutenant of Ireland, but by 1938 (and Irish independence) the first president of Ireland was living there, albeit on what was intended to be a temporary basis.
At that time the building was actually scheduled for demolition, but the onset of the second World War delayed the demolition and by the time the war was over the building and the presidential office had an association that it was decided should not be broken.
Over the years the palace has seen rebuilding and refurbishment and, although it is comparatively small compared with many other nation’s state residences, it has become one of Ireland’s iconic buildings.
Tourist tip
This imposing building is worth seeing even on a weekday if for no other reason than to say that you have seen it.
